Restored from Scalp to Soul

In this edition of The Tea, we’re sharing a Tea Time conversation with Emily McKee, TeaCup member and founder of Gorgeously You Salon. Emily is a licensed cosmetologist, educator, and healing beauty specialist dedicated to helping people feel restored from scalp to soul—blending beauty, education, and mental wellness into every experience she offers. Guided by Stephanie Pellish, this feature is a reminder that self-care is not vanity, but rather a foundation that supports confidence, healing, and the way women show up for themselves, their families, and their businesses.

From Corporate to Calling: The Power of the Pivot

Emily didn’t start out on a straight path into entrepreneurship.

Like many women, she spent years doing what she was “supposed” to do: moving through corporate job after corporate job, performing well, checking the boxes… and quietly feeling the truth underneath it all:

It wasn’t filling her soul.

Eventually, the disconnect became too loud to ignore. With support from her grandfather, Emily made the leap into beauty school… originally hoping to focus on aesthetics, then pivoting into cosmetology when that option wasn’t available.

And that’s where the magic happened.

What started as a “backup plan” turned into a deep love for hair, scalp work, and the kind of care that goes far beyond a surface-level service. Even early on, she found herself asking the questions that matter:

“How are you healing?”
“What’s going on with your scalp?”
“How are you really doing?”

Because for Emily, the foundation is simple: If you ask the right questions, you open the right dialogue—and that’s where real support begins.

Where Beauty Meets Self-Care

One of the most meaningful parts of this conversation is Emily’s honesty about mental health—how it shaped her, how she’s navigated it, and how it’s woven into the way she serves others.

Emily shared that she began struggling with severe mental health challenges at a young age and was fortunate to have a supportive family who helped her access care. Over time, she learned something many of us learn the hard way: You can’t just “do the steps” and expect healing to happen. You have to actually do the work. Emily spoke openly about how treatment, tools, and personal growth all played a role in helping her not just survive… but thrive.

We she said something that so many women will recognize instantly: Even when you’re doing well, mental health can still try to convince you you’re not worthy.
That you’re not good enough.
That you’re an imposter.

But instead of letting that voice win, Emily used it to build a life (and a business) around choosing a different message.

A Salon as a Safe Space (Not Just an Appointment)

Most people don’t come into beauty spaces just for beauty. They come because they need a place to exhale. A place to let go. To be held, even if they don’t have the words for it. To stop performing for a while.

And Emily is deeply aware of the responsibility that comes with that.

She talked about the power service providers hold and how important it is to “wield it correctly.” That’s why she starts her classes with gratitude and affirmations, even when it feels uncomfortable at first.

At Gorgeously You, the goal isn’t to “fix” someone. It’s to make it safe for them to show up as they are—sweatpants, messy bun, exhausted mom energy and all—and still be met with respect, warmth, and care.

As Steph shared during the episode, that’s what makes Emily’s space so special: You don’t have to arrive polished. You just have to arrive.

Confidence Isn’t a Look. It’s a Shift.

Emily described her favorite moment in her work—the moment a client gets off the table, looks in the mirror, and their entire energy changes. Not because they look “better” in some societal sense. But because they feel like themselves again.

Where they stand more fully in their power.

That’s the work. Helping women see the beauty she sees in them, especially when they’ve forgotten it’s there.

Entrepreneurship, Autonomy, and Choosing Your Own “Box”

When Steph asked what inspired Emily to open her own salon, her answer hit home for anyone who has ever felt the tension of building inside someone else’s vision.

Emily explained that she had a choice:

  • Stay and work within someone else’s values, structure, and “ceiling”… or

  • Take the leap and build something aligned with who she is and what she believes

It wasn’t easy. She wasn’t always confident. In fact, she shared that when she chose cosmetology school, people doubted her hard.

How Emily Takes Care of Emily

Steph asked a question every caregiver, leader, entrepreneur, and mom needs to hear on repeat:

How do you take care of yourself?

She shared the practices that keep her grounded, including:

  • Faith and worship music

  • Journaling and gratitude

  • Affirmations and nervous system grounding

  • Movement to release anxious energy

  • Lymphatic care (for wellness, inflammation, and immunity support)

  • Skincare as both a physical and mental health ritual

A reminder: we do the best we can with what we have in the moment.

Why Emily Chose TeaCup Entrepreneurs

One of the most touching parts of the episode was hearing how Emily found TeaCup.

A close friend told her, “You need to be in this room.” Emily quietly observed for a bit—and once she opened her business, she knew she needed community that felt aligned with her values. Not stale advice. Not performative networking. Not “bro marketing.” A space where women support women, for real.

Emily described walking into TeaCup for the first time and feeling it immediately: No masks.
No awkwardness. No question of whether she belonged.

Just intention, connection, and the kind of community that reminds you to take care of yourself while you build.

As Steph reflected, that’s the heart of TeaCup—building the woman behind the business. Not overnight - through small steps, real relationships, new habits, better systems, and a community that holds you through the process.

See Emily at She Who Leads

Emily will be one of the panelists at the upcoming She Who Leads event, and her hope for every woman in the room is simple and strong: To pause and ask, “What are you doing to take care of you? And what needs to change so you can feel balanced, empowered, and supported again?”

And yes—she also hopes you drink your water. Hydration is key. Always.
