Kathleen Brogan: Reinventing a Career to Better Support Families Through Life’s Biggest Transitions

Sometimes entrepreneurship doesn’t begin with a business plan. Sometimes it begins with a feeling you can’t ignore anymore.

For TeaCup Entrepreneurs member Kathleen Brogan, that feeling showed up during maternity leave. After years as a speech therapist and rehab director in skilled nursing facilities, she found herself asking a question so many women quietly carry:

Do I really want to do this for the next 30 years?

What followed wasn’t a reckless leap. It was a thoughtful reinvention rooted in experience, relationships, and a deep desire to continue helping people in a more aligned way.

Discovering Speech Therapy by Accident

Kathleen didn’t grow up dreaming of becoming a speech therapist. In fact, she didn’t even know what speech therapy was until a family friend mentioned the program at the college she planned to attend.

That one conversation changed everything.

She enrolled in the program, quickly realizing she loved the healthcare field and the flexibility the career could offer. While many classmates gravitated toward working with children, Kathleen found herself drawn to the medical side of speech pathology—supporting adults with swallowing disorders, Parkinson’s disease, dementia, and neurological conditions.

After graduate school, she stepped into the world of skilled nursing facilities as the only speech therapist in her building (an experience she described as being “thrown to the wolves” as a brand-new clinician!)

But even in those early years, something else started emerging.

The Skills She Didn’t Realize She Was Building

Kathleen eventually became a rehab director at just 25 years old—a role that expanded far beyond speech therapy.

She wasn’t only managing therapy schedules and patient care. She was:

  • coordinating with families

  • navigating insurance systems

  • supporting discharge planning

  • problem-solving across departments

  • helping people make difficult healthcare decisions

And somewhere in the middle of all of that, she discovered something surprising:

She loved the “people side” of the work even more than the clinical side.

The hard conversations didn’t scare her.
The complicated family dynamics didn’t overwhelm her.
Helping people navigate uncertainty actually energized her.

Over time, Kathleen realized the biggest strengths she was developing had less to do with speech therapy itself, and more to do with communication, leadership, emotional intelligence, and helping families feel supported in stressful moments.

The Turning Point: Maternity Leave

When Kathleen went on maternity leave after having her son, everything shifted.

For the first time in years, she had space to pause and think about what she actually wanted moving forward. While she appreciated the flexibility and support of her job, she couldn’t shake the feeling that she wanted something different.

So she started researching.

She joined online groups for therapists leaving clinical work. She built a LinkedIn profile from scratch. She reached out to former speech therapists who had transitioned into completely different careers just to ask:

  • What do you do now?

  • How did you make the leap?

  • What else can these skills become?

And perhaps most importantly, she started recognizing that her experience wasn’t “just” speech therapy.

She had spent years helping families navigate overwhelming healthcare systems… and that knowledge had real value outside of a rehab building.

The Conversation That Changed Everything

One morning, Kathleen decided to message a former coworker of her husband’s. That simple outreach led to an introduction to Lori Bernstein, founder of Senior Living Specialists.

What Kathleen expected to be an informational conversation quickly became something much bigger.

As Lori described the role—helping families find the right senior living communities, walking them through difficult transitions, and supporting them through overwhelming decisions—Kathleen immediately knew:

This is it.

She realized her entire background had quietly prepared her for this exact work.

What a Senior Living Specialist Actually Does

Today, Kathleen helps families navigate one of the most emotional and complicated transitions they may ever face: moving a loved one into senior living.

But her role goes far beyond simply recommending communities. She:

  • assesses the person’s physical, cognitive, emotional, and financial needs

  • helps narrow down the best-fit communities

  • explains pricing and levels of care

  • coordinates paperwork and assessments

  • attends tours with families

  • advocates for families during the process

  • connects them with additional resources and support services

And perhaps most importantly—she helps families feel less alone.

Kathleen understands that these decisions are rarely just logistical. They’re emotional.

Families are often navigating:

  • guilt

  • grief

  • resistance

  • uncertainty

  • burnout

  • fear about “what’s next”

And because of her clinical background, Kathleen brings a level of understanding that many families deeply need. She can often recognize needs or concerns that others may miss, helping families make decisions with greater clarity and confidence.

More Than Placement: Supporting Seniors Wherever They Are

One of the most meaningful parts of Kathleen’s work is that she isn’t only helping people move into communities.

Sometimes the best solution is helping someone stay safely in their home.

Through the relationships she’s built, Kathleen can connect families with:

  • home care services

  • occupational therapists

  • move managers

  • senior resources

  • support programs

  • aging-in-place modifications

She described meeting professionals she never even knew existed—like move managers who help seniors thoughtfully sort through decades of belongings before a transition.

For Kathleen, that network of support matters just as much as the placement itself.

And because Senior Living Specialists’ services are completely free for families, she’s able to focus on helping people without pressure or obligation.

Becoming an Entrepreneur Without Planning To

Kathleen never imagined herself in an entrepreneurial role.

In fact, she openly admitted that she once viewed herself as someone with “just” a speech therapy degree and no business background.

But stepping into this role showed her something important:

Entrepreneurship isn’t always about inventing something brand new.

Sometimes it’s about taking the skills you already have and applying them in a completely different way.

Now, much of Kathleen’s work revolves around:

  • networking

  • relationship-building

  • community outreach

  • referrals

  • creating partnerships

And while she jokes that the role is “salesy,” the heart of the work remains the same:

Helping people through difficult moments with honesty and support.

Learning to Trust Herself

One of the biggest adjustments for Kathleen has been learning how to structure her own days and decide where her time and energy are best spent.

Unlike her former role with strict schedules and clear expectations, entrepreneurship requires constant adjustment.

Some networking opportunities lead nowhere.
Some relationships become invaluable.
Some ideas stick. Others don’t.

But over time, she’s learned how to recognize where her efforts truly matter and how to stop forcing connections that aren’t aligned.

That self-trust has become one of the most valuable skills of all.

Kathleen was introduced to TeaCup Entrepreneurs through a colleague who encouraged her to try a women-focused networking space.

And almost immediately, she felt the difference.

Instead of surface-level networking and forced elevator pitches, she found:

Now, she’s helping families navigate life transitions with more clarity, more compassion, and far less overwhelm.

And in many ways, she’s still doing exactly what she’s always done best:
